Cairns is a small tropical city that exists mostly as a launch pad for the Great Barrier Reef. The reef is roughly 90 minutes offshore by catamaran, which is the only reason you and three other ships are here today.
Yes. Outer-reef pontoon trips run by Quicksilver, Great Adventures, Sunlover and Reef Magic depart Cairns Reef Fleet Terminal between 7:30 and 8:30am and return by about 4:30pm. The boat ride is roughly 90 minutes each way to the outer reef.
Trinity Wharf cruise terminal is a 5-minute walk from the Reef Fleet Terminal where the day-boats leave from. Book the reef trip in advance — they sell out, and the ship will not wait if your operator is late.

Taxis queue at Trinity Wharf and use a meter. Expect AUD 15–25 for short trips inside Cairns, AUD 30–45 to the airport, and AUD 90–120 one-way to Port Douglas. Uber and DiDi both operate here. Decline any flat-rate offer that is more than the meter would charge.
AUD is the only currency in use. Visa and Mastercard are accepted at almost every shop, restaurant, and reef-boat operator; American Express less consistently. Decline dynamic currency conversion at the terminal — it always costs more than letting your bank do the math.
Kuranda is a 25-minute drive plus the Skyrail cableway or Scenic Railway up the range, manageable in 4–5 hours round trip. Port Douglas is about 70 km north (60–75 minutes each way) and only worth it if your ship is in port for at least 9 hours. Daintree is further again — not realistic on a port day.
Most ships dock alongside at Trinity Wharf in the centre of Cairns. The largest ships occasionally anchor in Trinity Bay and tender passengers to the Reef Fleet Terminal. From either landing it is a 5–10 minute walk to the Esplanade and the day-boat departure pontoons.
Day-boat operators (Quicksilver to Agincourt Reef, Great Adventures and Sunlover to Norman and Moore Reef, Reef Magic to Marine World) run pontoons on the outer reef with intro and certified dives. Inner reef sites at Green Island and Fitzroy Island are closer (45–60 minutes) but with shallower, less varied coral.

About 90 minutes by high-speed catamaran from Cairns to the outer reef pontoons. Closer reefs around Green Island take roughly 45 minutes; Fitzroy Island is about 45–60 minutes. Inner-reef trips are cheaper but the coral is generally less impressive than the outer reef.
Only if you have snorkelled the reef before, or you are travelling with someone who cannot or will not get in the water. Kuranda is a rainforest village reached by Skyrail cableway and Scenic Railway — a pleasant half-day, but the reef is the reason most cruise itineraries stop in Cairns at all.
Yes. Most outer-reef operators offer one-tank introductory dives for non-certified divers and certified two-tank dives for qualified divers, all within the day-trip window. Bring your certification card and a recent dive log if you are certified.
Australian dollar (AUD). Cards are accepted almost everywhere in town and on reef boats; cash is rarely needed. ATMs are easy to find on Abbott Street and the Esplanade if you want some.
Yes. Trinity Wharf, the Esplanade, the Reef Fleet Terminal, the Cairns Lagoon, and most central restaurants are all within a flat 10-minute walk of each other. There is no need for a taxi unless you are going to the airport, Palm Cove, or Port Douglas.
