Willingdon Island sits between Fort Kochi (the old colonial peninsula) and Ernakulam (the modern city on the mainland). Most ship excursions and prepaid taxis head straight for Fort Kochi or out to the Kerala backwaters at Alappuzha (about 90 minutes south).
There is a prepaid taxi and tour-operator counter inside the terminal. Use it. Outside the gate, agree on the fare in INR before getting into any auto-rickshaw or private car — meters are rarely used. A round-trip to Fort Kochi for a few hours typically runs in the low thousands of rupees; a full-day car for the backwaters is more.

The classic Kerala backwater day is a houseboat or shikara out of Alappuzha (Alleppey), roughly 90 minutes by road south of the port. Closer alternatives exist around Kumarakom. Either way, leave a wide buffer for traffic and confirm your driver understands your all-aboard time — Kochi traffic does not negotiate.
