Colombo doesn't try to charm you on arrival. The terminal sits inside a working commercial port, traffic is honest about itself, and the heat lands the moment the gangway opens.
Stay in the city unless your ship offers an organized excursion to Kandy or Galle. A half-day loop covering Galle Face Green, Pettah Market, and Gangaramaya Temple by metered taxi or PickMe runs around three to four hours and leaves room for lunch and a buffer back to the pier.

Kandy (Temple of the Tooth, around 115 km, three to four hours each way) and Galle (Dutch fort town, around 120 km south, two-and-a-half to four hours each way) are both feasible but tight. The southern expressway helps Galle; the road to Kandy is a slow climb. The ship will not wait — independent trips put the all-aboard risk entirely on you.
