Bali's cruise port is Benoa Harbour, a working container terminal on a man-made spit south of Denpasar. The temples and rice terraces you booked the cruise for are all somewhere else, separated from you by a traffic jam.
One thing well. Pick a single anchor — Ubud, Uluwatu, Seminyak beach clubs, or Tanah Lot — and commit. Stacking two means spending the day in a car.
Benoa is ~30 min from Kuta/Seminyak, 60–90 min to Ubud, and ~75–120 min to Tanah Lot or Tegallalang. Traffic is the limiting factor, not distance. A private driver via WhatsApp or Grab is the standard play; expect IDR 700,000–1,200,000 (roughly $45–80) for an 8-hour car with driver.
Grab and Gojek work from Benoa to Kuta, Seminyak, Nusa Dua, and Sanur — IDR 100,000–250,000 ($7–17) one-way. For Ubud, Tanah Lot, or Uluwatu, book a private driver in advance: IDR 700,000–1,200,000 ($45–80) for 8 hours including waiting time and fuel. Airport taxi cooperative cars at the pier are about double Grab pricing — agree on a price before getting in if you skip the apps.
ATMs are common and reliable in Kuta, Seminyak, Sanur, Nusa Dua, and Ubud — stick to bank-branded ones (BCA, Mandiri, BNI, CIMB Niaga) and decline DCC. Cards work at hotels, beach clubs, and mid-range restaurants. Cash-only for warungs, temples, sarong rentals, and street vendors. Tipping isn't expected but is appreciated; 5,000–10,000 IDR for a porter, 10% if service isn't already added.
Ubud (60–90 min) for rice terraces, Monkey Forest, and crafts. Uluwatu (45–60 min) for the cliff temple, Kecak fire dance at sunset, and Padang Padang beach. Seminyak/Canggu (30–45 min) for beach clubs and shopping. Two-anchor itineraries almost always overrun — pick one and treat it as the day.
Container terminal on a reclaimed spit ~13 km southeast of Denpasar. Larger ships sometimes anchor and tender. There's a small terminal building with bag scanners and a taxi rank, and that's it — no walkable town, no restaurants, no beach. Plan to leave the gate and not come back until embarkation.
Bali's marquee dive sites — Tulamben's USAT Liberty wreck, Menjangan, Nusa Penida's Manta Point — are all 90+ minutes from Benoa before boat time, which makes them a stretch on most cruise schedules. Snorkel-only Nusa Penida day trips from Sanur (Crystal Bay, Manta Bay) are tight but doable if your ship's in port from 7am to 6pm or later.
Potato Head, Finns, La Brisa, and Mrs Sippy all take walk-ins but fill fast when ships are in. Day-bed minimums run IDR 500,000–1,500,000 ($32–95) and are usually spendable on food and drinks. Plan ~30 minutes from Benoa to Seminyak, 45 to Canggu in light traffic — both numbers double in afternoon rush.
Benoa Harbour, on a reclaimed spit at the southern tip of Bali, about 20 minutes from Ngurah Rai International Airport and 30 minutes from Kuta. The pier is industrial — cranes, container yards, and a small terminal building. There is essentially nothing within walking distance, so you commit to transport the moment you step off the ship.
Realistic but tight. Plan 60–90 minutes each way and 4–5 hours on the ground if you want a Tegallalang rice terrace, the Sacred Monkey Forest, and lunch without sprinting. Add a temple or a coffee plantation and you're cutting back-to-ship margin too thin. Most independent travelers do Ubud OR South Bali, not both.
Grab and Gojek both work reliably in South Bali (Kuta, Seminyak, Nusa Dua, Sanur) and to and from the airport area. For all-day touring or anywhere north of Sanur, a hired car with driver is cheaper per hour and avoids the surge pricing and pickup-zone restrictions that hit ride-share at tourist sites. Drivers wait at no extra charge — that's the model.
Not at Benoa itself — the harbor is industrial and the water isn't for swimming. The nearest decent beaches are Nusa Dua (15 minutes, calm and resort-flanked) and Sanur (20 minutes, mellow and family-friendly). For real snorkeling you want a Nusa Penida or Lembongan day trip, but those depart from Sanur and the round-trip fast boat plus shore time eats the entire cruise day.
Plan around IDR 1,000,000–1,500,000 per person ($65–100) if you're touring with a driver, eating one local lunch, and tipping. ATMs are everywhere in Kuta, Seminyak, and Ubud — use bank-affiliated ones (BCA, Mandiri, BNI) and decline the dynamic currency conversion screen. Most warungs and small shops are cash-only; mid-range restaurants and beach clubs take cards.
Two things: bare shoulders and bare knees. Every active temple — Tanah Lot, Uluwatu, Tirta Empul, Besakih — requires a sarong and sash, which they rent or include in admission. Menstruating women are traditionally asked not to enter the inner sanctum; this is posted at every entrance and is taken seriously, not as a tourist suggestion.
