Edinburgh is the cruise port that isn't really a port. Most ships drop anchor in the Firth of Forth and tender you to South Queensferry, a small village 30 minutes by coach from the Royal Mile.

Smaller ships dock at Hawes Pier; larger ships anchor in the Firth of Forth and run tenders. A few calls reroute to Rosyth (about 10 miles west) when weather closes the anchorage.

ATMs are on South Queensferry High Street and on every block in central Edinburgh. Scottish banknotes are legal tender across the UK but occasionally refused by retailers further south; not relevant for a single port day.
The default day: 30-min coach to the city centre, walk the Royal Mile from Castle Esplanade down to Holyrood, pre-booked Castle entry mid-morning. Add the National Museum of Scotland (free) if energy holds. Stirling Castle, Rosslyn Chapel, or a Highlands sampler are realistic only on calls of 9+ hours and only via organised tour.

Castle entry should be pre-booked online; same-day tickets often sell out by mid-morning in summer. If you only have six hours ashore, pick two of: Castle, Royal Mile walk, National Museum of Scotland, Holyrood Palace.
A short cobbled high street, a handful of pubs (the Hawes Inn dates to 1683 and turns up in Robert Louis Stevenson's Kidnapped), and some of the best photographs you'll get of the Forth Bridge — the 1890 cantilever rail bridge that's now a UNESCO site. Walking the village end-to-end takes about 90 minutes including a pub lunch.
A few times each season the Firth gets rough enough that tender operations are scrubbed. Some lines reroute to Rosyth (about 10 miles west, where the deepwater berth can take large ships alongside) and run a longer coach transfer; others convert the call to a sea day. Check with your shore-excursions desk the night before if forecasts look windy.
Independent works fine for the city centre — bus 43 from South Queensferry High Street drops you at Princes Street for a few pounds. The case for a ship excursion is the tender priority (you're off the ship sooner) and the all-aboard guarantee if something runs late. For Stirling Castle, Rosslyn Chapel, or anything inland beyond Edinburgh proper, a ship tour or a pre-booked private driver is the saner option.
