Flåm is a village of roughly 350 people at the inner end of Aurlandsfjord that, on a busy summer Tuesday, hosts more cruise passengers than residents by a factor of ten.
The train itself runs on a public schedule and tickets are available at the Flåm station for around NOK 650 round-trip if seats remain — but on cruise days the morning departures often sell out by the time independent walk-ups arrive at the window. Ship-organized excursions guarantee a seat and add a fjord cruise or Stegastein leg; independents save money but risk standing in line for the next train.
Vy (the operator) publishes the Flåmsbana timetable at vy.no; cruise-day demand routinely exceeds capacity on the 9:00–11:00 departures.

Flåm has no standing taxi queue at the pier. Aurland Taxi is the local operator; call or pre-book online for transfers to Stegastein, Aurland village, or Voss. Expect roughly NOK 1,200 round-trip to Stegastein with a wait, and book at least 24 hours ahead on cruise days.
The Norwegian krone (NOK) is the local currency. Norway is one of the most cashless countries in the world; every vendor in Flåm — including the train ticket office, the brewpub, and the souvenir shops — takes contactless card and mobile pay. There is no ATM in the village. Decline dynamic currency conversion at the terminal and pay in NOK.
The three signature excursions are the Flåm Railway round-trip to Myrdal (about 2 hr 15 min), the fjord cruise to Gudvangen through Nærøyfjord (about 2 hours one-way, returning by bus), and the Stegastein viewpoint shuttle (about 1 hr 45 min round-trip). The full Norway in a Nutshell loop combines train, bus, and fjord cruise and runs roughly 8 hours — only attempt it on a 10+ hour port call.
Ships berth at the Flåm cruise pier directly in the village. The train station is about 200 meters from the gangway; the visitor center, brewpub, and souvenir row are all within a 5-minute walk. No tenders, no shuttle buses needed inside the village.
The one-way ride to Myrdal is about 55–60 minutes; most cruise itineraries do a round-trip with a short turnaround at Myrdal, putting the total at roughly 2 hours 15 minutes including the Kjosfossen waterfall photo stop on the way up.
The classic loop — Flåmsbana up to Myrdal, Bergen Line back down to Voss, bus to Gudvangen, fjord cruise back to Flåm — runs about 8 hours and is tight but doable on a long port call (10+ hours alongside). Anything shorter and you risk missing the ship; cruise lines run a compressed version with a fjord cruise plus train as their flagship excursion.
There is no public bus from Flåm to Stegastein; the road is too steep and narrow for tour coaches above a certain length, so most ship excursions use minibuses. Independents can pre-book a shuttle through Visit Flåm or take a taxi (roughly NOK 1,200 round-trip with a 30-minute wait at the platform).
Cruise season runs May to September. July highs average 18°C / 64°F, but the fjord walls trap weather and rain is frequent — Aurland municipality logs around 180 wet days per year. Pack layers and a waterproof shell even in midsummer; the train climbs into colder air at Myrdal where snow can linger into June.
Norway is effectively cashless and Flåm has no bank branch or ATM at the pier. Every shop, café, and the train ticket office takes contactless cards including Apple Pay and Google Pay; bring a card with no foreign transaction fee rather than cash. The local currency is Norwegian krone (NOK), not euros.
Bergen is about 165 km southwest by road (roughly 3 hours by car or coach via the E16) or 5.5 hours via the scenic Norway in a Nutshell rail-and-fjord route. Some itineraries do Flåm and Bergen as separate port calls; transfers between them on the same day are not practical for cruise passengers.
