Florø is Norway's westernmost town, a 9,000-person fishing port that the cruise industry mostly uses as a back-door entrance to Nordfjord. The town itself is small enough to walk in 20 minutes, which is either the appeal or the disappointment depending on what you wanted from your shore day.
Three real options. The boat to Kinn Island (about 45 minutes each way from Florø Terminal) gets you a 12th-century stone church, a short coastal walk, and a sense of why people lived out here for a thousand years — the most authentic move if your ship is in for 8+ hours. The bus to Briksdal glacier in Nordfjord is the headline excursion most cruise lines push, but it eats roughly 5 hours of driving for a 1-hour glacier visit; only worth it if you've never seen a glacier and don't have Geirangerfjord or Olden later in the itinerary. Or stay in Florø: walk the harbour, visit the Coastal Museum (Kystmuseet), grab cinnamon buns, and do not feel guilty about it.
Florø itself is genuinely small — you will not fill 8 hours here without a boat or a bus. Plan accordingly before the ship arrives.

Florø is small enough that taxis are a fallback, not a default. Local operators include Kinn Taxi AS (tel. 97 33 31 11) and Florø Drosjesentral. Fares are meter-based: starting fare around 100 NOK, then roughly 14.5 NOK per kilometre — a 5 km hop is about 170 NOK. Cards work in nearly all Norwegian cabs. There is no Uber. For excursions further afield (Briksdal, Førde airport), book a private car in advance through your cruise line or directly with Kinn Taxi rather than expecting one to be queuing at the pier.
Norway uses the krone (NOK), not the euro. Contactless and chip-and-PIN are universal — cafés, the Coastal Museum, the Kinn boat ticket office, and the Florø grocery stores all take cards without comment. ATMs (minibank) exist in town if you need cash for a small market stall, but most cruise passengers genuinely don't need any. If your card is Visa or Mastercard you're set; American Express works at hotels and chain stores but expect blank looks at smaller cafés.
Two real day-trip choices. Kinn Island: take the public boat from Florø Terminal — 45 minutes each way, five weekday departures and two on weekends, with extra summer sailings — for the 12th-century stone church and a coastal walk. Briksdal glacier in Nordfjord: a long cruise-line excursion, roughly 2 to 2.5 hours each way by bus to Olden, then onward to the glacier valley with optional Troll Car. Only do Briksdal from Florø if your itinerary has no other Nordfjord call.
Cruise ships dock alongside at Fugleskjærskaia on Florø's main waterfront — no tendering. The town centre is roughly 700 metres / 0.45 miles away on a flat, paved harbour walk, about 8–10 minutes. Larger ships sometimes use the adjacent commercial pier; the walking distance is comparable. Florø Terminal, where the Kinn Island boat departs, is on the same harbour stretch a few minutes further along.

Only if you don't have an Olden, Geirangerfjord, or Flåm call later in the same cruise. Briksdalsbre is part of Jostedalsbreen — mainland Europe's largest glacier — and it's spectacular, but Florø is on the wrong side of the country for an easy day trip. Expect roughly 2 to 2.5 hours by bus each way to Olden, then the standard Olden-to-Briksdal valley loop. You will spend more of the day looking at the inside of a coach than at ice. From Olden as a port call, the same excursion is half the time.
Possibly, but it will already be on your cruise fare or excursion bill, not collected at the gangway. Norway's parliament approved a visitor's contribution of up to 3% on overnight stays and cruise passengers starting July 1, 2026. The fee is voluntary at the municipal level — only municipalities under tourism pressure can opt in — and Florø's home municipality (Kinn) has not been a flagship adopter the way Lofoten and Tromsø have. Check your cruise line's pre-arrival paperwork rather than worrying about cash on the day.
Indirectly. Since 1 January 2026, all passenger ships under 10,000 GT must run on zero-emission energy inside Norway's UNESCO World Heritage fjords (Geirangerfjord, Nærøyfjord, Aurlandsfjord, Sunnylvsfjord, Tafjord). The rule extends to ships 10,000 GT and larger from 1 January 2032. Florø itself is not inside any of those fjords, so the call is unaffected — but the rule is the reason some 2026 itineraries have quietly swapped Geiranger for Florø, Olden, or Åndalsnes while the larger fleet is not yet ready to comply.
Honest answer: it's filler that's quietly pleasant. Florø is not Bergen and not trying to be — there is no major museum, no cathedral, no cable-car-and-fjord postcard moment in town. What there is: a working fishing harbour, the Coastal Museum of Sogn og Fjordane (Kystmuseet) about 10 minutes' walk from the centre, the Florø church (1882, simple white timber), and good coffee. If your itinerary lists Florø between two bigger ports, treat it as a quiet day on purpose, not a missed opportunity.
