Taxi
Train ~€10 to Florence or licensed taxi from pier
From Livorno Centrale, regional trains to Firenze Santa Maria Novella run roughly hourly, take 80–95 minutes, and cost about €10 one-way. Buy at the station machines (cards accepted) and validate before boarding — unvalidated tickets carry a fine. Licensed Livorno taxis are white with a roof sign and a working meter; confirm the meter is on. A taxi from the cruise pier to Livorno Centrale runs roughly €15–20. Uber does not operate broadly in Tuscany — stick to official taxi ranks or pre-booked NCC (private hire) cars.
Currency
Euro (EUR); cards accepted, small cash for espresso bars
Italy uses the euro. Contactless and chip-and-PIN are universal at museums, sit-down restaurants, train ticket machines, and supermarkets. Carry €40–60 in small notes for stand-up espresso bars (they're cheaper at the counter than at a table), gelato, church donations, and tipping. ATMs (bancomat) are everywhere — use bank-branded ones (Intesa, UniCredit, BNL) and decline the dynamic-currency-conversion offer.
Day trip
Pisa, San Gimignano, or Chianti winery lunch
Pisa: 20 km from the pier, the Leaning Tower plus Piazza dei Miracoli is a half-day, leaves time for Lucca too. San Gimignano: medieval hill town about 90 minutes inland, the towers and the gelato are real. Chianti: vineyard lunches in the hills between Florence and Siena, typically a small-group tour of €120–180 per person. All three are realistic on an 8–10 hour cruise call. Florence plus any of them in the same day is not.
Dock
Alongside berths at Porto di Livorno, ~90 km west of Florence
Livorno is a working commercial port — container terminals, ferry traffic, cruise. Ships dock at the Porto Mediceo or Alto Fondale berths, all alongside (no tendering). You're not in Florence, you're not even in central Livorno yet. A free or paid shuttle bus runs from the cruise terminal to Piazza del Municipio in the Livorno old town; from there you'll need a local bus or 10-minute walk to reach Livorno Centrale train station. Confirm the shuttle setup on your ship's daily — it varies by cruise line.
Beach clubs
Tirrenia / Calambrone — skip on a cruise day
The Tuscan coast south of Livorno (Tirrenia, Calambrone, the Versilia stretch toward Viareggio) has paid beach clubs (stabilimenti) running €20–40 for a sunbed in season. Pleasant. But you came to Tuscany — Renaissance Tuscany is the point, and the beach is 200 km of Mediterranean you can stare at from the lido deck. Save it for a port where the art isn't the headline.
