Buy at La Spezia Centrale ticket machines or online at card.parconazionale5terre.it. The plain Trekking Card (from €7.50) doesn't cover trains, which makes it a bad fit for a 9-hour cruise call.

Yes — the Riomaggiore-to-Manarola path reopened 9 August 2024 after a 12-year closure and €23 million reconstruction. It runs one-way only, Riomaggiore to Manarola, with timed entry and a 400-people-per-hour cap. As of March 2026 it's bundled into the Cinque Terre Card, but you still need a timed slot reserved at card.parconazionale5terre.it before you arrive — walk-ups are not allowed. Cruise-day plan: book the slot the night before, take the first morning train to Riomaggiore, walk the path to Manarola, then keep going by train.

Technically yes; we'd talk you out of it. Fastest direct Frecciargento or Intercity trains run La Spezia Centrale to Firenze Santa Maria Novella in about 2 hours 1 minute, regional services 2.5 hours. That's a 4–5 hour rail commitment round-trip out of a typical 9-hour call. If your ship also stops at Livorno or Civitavecchia on the same itinerary, save Florence for that day — Livorno-to-Florence is half the time. La Spezia's natural day-trip is Cinque Terre; that's why the cruise lines schedule it here.

Roughly every 20 minutes — about 3 trains per hour — in the high-frequency window (16 March to 3 November 2026). Off-season the regional service drops to 1–2 trains per hour. End-to-end La Spezia to Monterosso is around 25 minutes; La Spezia to Riomaggiore is 8 minutes. The trains are crowded on summer weekends and during the cruise-ship rush from 9–10am; if you're traveling as a group, get on at the origin (La Spezia Centrale) rather than trying to board a packed train at Manarola at 2pm.

La Spezia taxis are licensed and metered — yellow or white cars with a roof sign, found at the rank across from the cruise terminal building. Cruise terminal to La Spezia Centrale station is roughly €12–15 and 5–10 minutes. A direct taxi to Riomaggiore (the closest Cinque Terre village by road) runs around €40 one-way and takes 25–30 minutes — almost always slower and pricier than the train. For a group of four, a taxi to the station, then the Cinque Terre Express, beats a direct cab to the villages on every metric.

Italy is on the euro and cards work nearly everywhere — train ticket machines, restaurants, the Cinque Terre Card portal, the Via dell'Amore turnstile. Carry €30–50 in small notes for village gelato stands, the occasional small trattoria with a 'card machine broken' moment, and bathroom turnstiles in train stations (€1 coin). ATMs are common in La Spezia town; in the villages they're scarcer and often charge fees. Pull cash before the train if you want it.
