That's the menu. The reef is the genuine draw — it's a protected area with healthy coral and reliable visibility — and you can wade in straight off the beach without booking anything. People who try to engineer a busier day here come back disappointed; the island's whole proposition is that there is nothing else.

Cash, and Australian dollars are the de-facto currency on cruise days. The Vanuatu vatu (VUV) is the official money but Aneityumese vendors price everything in AUD when ships are in, because that's what their customers carry. Expect AUD 5–20 for crafts, AUD 5–10 for food and drinks. There are no ATMs, no card readers, and no banks — anywhere on Mystery Island or on Aneityum proper. Bring small notes; vendors rarely have change for a fifty.

P&O Cruises Australia, which historically made Mystery Island a near-weekly call, was wound down in March 2025 when Carnival Corporation folded the brand and rebadged its ships under Carnival Cruise Line. The result is fewer total calls than five years ago but the same itinerary geography.

Yes. The 7.3-magnitude quake on 17 December 2024 hit Port Vila on Efate, roughly 700 km north of Aneityum, and damage to southern Vanuatu was minimal. Cruise calls to Mystery Island resumed within weeks — Carnival Luminosa was diverted here while Port Vila was closed — and the call has been continuous since. Port Vila itself reopened to cruise ships in August 2025; if your itinerary lists both, both are running.

Yes, and it's worth doing once. Local boatmen run a short shuttle across the channel from the tender jetty to Anelcauhat village on Aneityum for a small fee (typically AUD 5–10 round trip). A village walk takes you past the school, the clinic, and the ruins of one of the first churches built in Vanuatu in the 1850s. There's no formal ticket office — you negotiate at the jetty. Allow 90 minutes minimum and watch your tender-back time; nobody will hold the ship.

Yes — better than most ship-day reefs. The fringing reef off Mystery Island is a protected marine area, the water is shallow and clear, and you can wade in from the beach without a guide. Bring your own mask and fins if you have them; the rentals on-island are limited and charge AUD 10–20. Visibility is reliable in the dry season (May–October); the wet season (November–April) brings occasional cloudier water after rain. There's also a small wreck site reachable on the boat-based snorkel excursions sold by the cruise lines.
