Taxi
Licensed metered taxis ~¥3,000–4,500 to downtown; IC cards widely accepted
Osaka taxis are uniformly licensed, metered, and among the most trustworthy in the world. Base fare around ¥600–700, then meter. Expect ¥3,000–4,500 from Tempozan to Osaka Castle, Dotonbori, or Namba depending on traffic; double that from Sakishima. Most accept Icoca / Suica and contactless cards, though a minority remain cash-only — confirm before riding. The rear door opens automatically; don't try to open it yourself. No tipping. Uber operates in Osaka but routes through the local taxi network at standard fares.
Currency
Japanese Yen (JPY); cards accepted in chains, cash for markets and counter shops
Currency is the Japanese Yen (¥). Major restaurants, department stores, JR ticket machines, and chain shops accept contactless and chip-and-PIN cards. Kuromon Ichiba market stalls, neighborhood izakaya, smaller Dotonbori counters, and shrine donation boxes remain cash-only. Withdraw ¥10,000–20,000 at any 7-Eleven ATM (they reliably accept foreign cards 24/7; convenience-store ATMs are the standard answer for tourists). Load an Icoca or Welcome Suica IC card with ¥3,000 at any JR or subway station for trains, buses, taxis, and convenience-store purchases. A new Tourist Pasmo launches May 2026.
Day trip
Kyoto (75–90 min door-to-temple) or Nara (60 min by JR)
Kyoto: Chuo line from Osakako to Hommachi, Midosuji line to Shin-Osaka, Tokaido Shinkansen to Kyoto Station — 15 minutes on the train, ¥1,450 unreserved, but plan 75–90 minutes door-to-Kiyomizu-dera with transfers and walking. Nara is the lower-stress alternative: JR Yamatoji rapid from Osaka Station to Nara is about 50 minutes, ¥820, and Todai-ji plus the deer park is a complete half-day. Both are realistic only if your call is 9+ hours; with anything shorter, stay in Osaka and do the city right.
Dock
Tempozan Cruise Terminal (most calls) or Osaka International Cruise Terminal at Sakishima
Tempozan is the everyday berth: alongside dock in the Minato ward, 5-minute flat walk to Osakako Station on the Chuo subway line, the new passenger terminal opened May 2024. Adjacent to the Osaka Aquarium and the Tempozan Marketplace mall. The Osaka International Cruise Terminal at Sakishima (sometimes printed as Cosmo Tower or Cosmo Square) is on a reclaimed island in an industrial zone — alongside, no tendering, but you'll need a ship shuttle to Cosmo Square Station before you can begin. Both are alongside berths; check your itinerary for which one you're getting.
