Taxi
Grab is the safe default; agree fares before riding
Grab gives you an upfront price and a tracked route — set it up before you sail. Metered taxis exist but drivers often quote flat fares, so confirm the price before getting in. Tuk-tuks charge tourist rates and are best for short hops only. The island is large, so budget real travel time between stops.
Currency
Thai baht (THB); cards widely accepted, carry some cash
The currency is the Thai baht (THB). Hotels, malls, and larger restaurants take cards, but markets, tuk-tuks, small cafes, and temple donations want cash. ATMs are common but charge a fixed foreign-card fee per withdrawal, so take out a sensible amount at once rather than in small repeated trips.
Day trip
Phi Phi and James Bond Island tours fill the whole day
Boat tours to Phi Phi or the James Bond Island area in Phang Nga Bay are the marquee Phuket excursion, but they consume the entire port day — piers are a 30-60 minute drive from where you land, plus hours on the water. If booking independently, build in a wide buffer against the all-aboard time; the ship will not wait.
Dock
Tender to Patong Bay or dock at Phuket Deep Sea Port
No dedicated cruise terminal. Smaller ships tender into Patong Bay, landing you centrally in Patong. Larger ships dock at Phuket Deep Sea Port near Cape Panwa, a working cargo port with a long jetty and little within walking distance. Either way, plan on a Grab or taxi to reach anything.
Dive sites
World-class diving, but most sites are a long boat trip
Phuket is a launch point for the Similan Islands and other top dive sites, but those are multi-hour boat journeys better suited to a land stay than a cruise day. For a port-day taster, shorter snorkel and intro-dive trips run from local piers — confirm the total round-trip time fits your all-aboard.
Beach clubs
Patong, Kata and Karon are the accessible beaches
If you tender into Patong, the beach is a short walk. Kata and Karon, just south, are calmer and a 20-30 minute Grab away. Loungers and umbrellas are rentable; beachfront restaurants are easy to find. Watch for seasonal rip currents and obey the warning flags — Phuket's surf can be deceptively strong in low season.
