The town centre takes about 20 minutes to walk. Nearly every worthwhile excursion involves the Sounds or the vineyards rather than Picton proper.

The Edwin Fox is one of the oldest surviving merchant sailing ships in the world, built in 1853, now preserved in a dedicated museum on the Picton foreshore. It is a short walk from where ships dock, and a reliable rainy-day option when the Sounds boat trips are weathered out.
Omaka is an aviation museum near Blenheim, known for its World War I and World War II aircraft displayed in detailed staged scenes — much of the collection connected to Peter Jackson's Wingnut Wings. It pairs well with a Blenheim wine visit since both are in the same direction from Picton.

Give the town a short walk — the foreshore, the Edwin Fox, a coffee — then head out. Picton's appeal is as a base. Spending the whole day in the centre means missing the Sounds and the wine country, which are the actual reasons cruise lines stop here.
