Taxi
Authorized taxis at the gate; downtown ~$25 USD round-trip
Amber Cove has an official taxi rank just past the security gate with posted fares — to Puerto Plata city is roughly $25 USD round-trip, Sosúa around $50, Cabarete $60, Damajagua waterfalls $70–90. Drivers expect U.S. dollars and the rate is per car (up to four passengers), not per person. Negotiate before getting in and ask the driver to wait if you want a return — a one-way drop in town and trying to flag a return cab unannounced is harder than it sounds. POLITUR (tourist police) at 809-222-2026 if anything goes sideways.
Currency
Dominican peso (DOP); U.S. dollars accepted everywhere tourists go
The official currency is the Dominican peso (DOP) but U.S. dollars are universally accepted at cruise-tourist prices in Puerto Plata, Sosúa, and Cabarete. Change typically comes back in pesos at a slightly unfavorable rate. Cards work at major restaurants and excursion operators but not always at small shops, taxis, or street vendors. Carry $40–60 in $1, $5, and $10 bills for tips, taxis, and snacks. Use bank-branded ATMs (Banreservas, Popular, BHD) and decline the dynamic-currency-conversion offer.
Day trip
Damajagua 27 Waterfalls or Mt. Isabel de Torres cable car
The two signature day trips from either Puerto Plata port. Damajagua is the active option — 45 minutes inland by van, then a hike up and a chain of 27 natural waterslides back down. The Teleférico cable car up Mt. Isabel de Torres is the lower-effort option when it's running (verify the morning of — 809-970-0501). For a half-day in town from Amber Cove: Fortaleza San Felipe (the 16th-century Spanish fort), the Amber Museum, and a wander through the Victorian-era streets around Parque Independencia.
Dock
Amber Cove pier (Maimón Bay) — alongside, no tendering
Amber Cove has two berths at a purpose-built pier in Maimón Bay, opened by Carnival Corporation in 2015. Ships dock alongside; no tenders. The complex includes infinity pools, a zipline, restaurants, a chairlift to a small private beach, and a gated shopping village. Amber Cove primarily handles Carnival Corp brands — Carnival, Holland America, Princess, and P&O. Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, MSC, Virgin, and most other lines dock at Taíno Bay, a separate terminal 10 km east next to downtown Puerto Plata.
Dive sites
Sosúa Bay reef diving — protected cove, easy beginner profile
Sosúa Bay is the local dive zone — a horseshoe-shaped reef sheltered from north swell, visibility usually 15–25 m, max depth around 25 m on the outer wall. Sites like Airport Wall and Three Rocks are mellow drift dives suitable for open-water-certified divers. Operators in Sosúa town (Northern Coast Diving, Big Blue) run cruise-day two-tank trips that fit a 9am–4pm port stay. Damajagua is the other water adventure if you'd rather slide than dive.
Beach clubs
Amber Cove's private beach on-site; Sosúa or Playa Dorada day passes for the real thing
Inside the complex: Amber Cove has a small private beach reached by chairlift, plus the famous infinity pools at the top of the property. It's pleasant but engineered. For a real Dominican beach day, taxi to Sosúa (30 minutes) for the calm cove with snorkel rentals and beach bars, or buy a day pass at one of the Playa Dorada resorts (around $40–80, includes lunch and bar). Cabarete is the surf alternative if your ship is in late.
