Fort Bulnes is a reconstructed 1843 fort about an hour south of the city, on a bluff over the Strait of Magellan, marking Chile's original claim to the region. It is a common half-day excursion and pairs well with the views over Tierra del Fuego across the water. Worth it if history and big landscapes appeal; skippable if you would rather have more time in town.
Layers and a real windproof jacket, whatever the calendar says. Punta Arenas weather changes fast and the wind off the Southern Ocean is relentless even in summer. A hat that will not blow away and shoes you can walk in are more useful here than anything fashionable.
