Athens cruise day is mostly about the Acropolis. Everything else is a side quest — and the side quests are good, but if you only get one move, it's the rock.
Three options. Metro Line 1 (the green line) from Piraeus station to Monastiraki takes 25–30 minutes and costs €1.40 — then a 10-minute walk uphill to the Acropolis entrance. A taxi from the cruise piers runs roughly €20–25 to the Acropolis area depending on traffic and which pier you dock at. Cruise line shuttles to Syntagma or the city center are usually €20+ per person round-trip. Metro is cheapest and often fastest at midday; taxi wins if you're a group of three or four.
The cruise piers are at the south end of Piraeus harbor; the metro station is at the north end, which can mean a 10–20 minute walk or a free port shuttle bus before you even start the trip. Build that in.

Metro Line 1 from Piraeus to Monastiraki: 25–30 minutes, €1.40 single ticket from the station vending machines. Licensed Athens taxis are yellow with a roof sign and a working meter — insist the meter is on (Tariff 1 daytime, Tariff 2 nights and holidays). Expect roughly €20–25 from the cruise piers to the Acropolis area, more in heavy traffic. Uber operates in Athens but only dispatches licensed taxis (Uber Taxi); private-car Uber is not legal here.
Greece uses the euro. Contactless and chip-and-PIN are universal in central Athens, the Acropolis ticket office, and chain restaurants. Carry €30–50 in small notes for neighborhood tavernas, taxi tips, and the occasional 'card machine is broken' moment. ATMs are everywhere — use bank-branded ones (Alpha, Eurobank, Piraeus, National Bank of Greece) and decline the dynamic-currency-conversion offer.
The Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion is the classic Athens day-trip — 70 km southeast, around 90 minutes by coach, dramatic sunset views over the Aegean. Realistic only if your ship is in past 8pm or overnighting. For most cruise calls, Athens itself is the day trip: Acropolis, Acropolis Museum, lunch in Plaka, done.
Piraeus is one of the busiest ports in the Mediterranean. Cruise ships dock at the southern piers (Themistocles, Miaouli, Alkimos) — all alongside, no tendering. The metro station and ferry terminals are at the north end of the harbor, a 10–20 minute walk or short shuttle ride from most cruise berths. Confirm your specific pier on your ship's daily — the walk to the metro varies meaningfully.
The Athens Riviera south of the city (Glyfada, Vouliagmeni, Astir Beach) has paid beach clubs running €25–60 for a sunbed in season. It's pleasant. It's also not why you got off the ship in Athens. Save the swim for an island day.
In summer, yes — non-negotiable. The Acropolis uses timed-entry tickets and the standard combo ticket (Acropolis plus six other archaeological sites) is €30 in peak season. Book through the official Hellenic Heritage e-ticket portal before you leave home; the on-site queue in July can eat 90 minutes of your shore day. In winter (November–March) tickets are roughly half price and queues are manageable.
Summer hours (April through October) run 8am to 8pm with last entry around 7:30pm. Winter hours (November through March) are 8:30am to 5pm. Cruise day plan: go first thing off the ship — the site is shadeless and brutal after 11am from June through September.
The metro itself is safe and well-policed; pickpockets are not. Line 1 between Piraeus and Monastiraki is the single most-targeted stretch in the Athens transit system, especially during the morning cruise rush. Wear your bag across your chest, keep phones out of back pockets, and be alert at Omonia and Monastiraki where the doors get crowded. This is a problem of pickpocketing, not violent crime — but it's a real, documented problem the embassy flags every season.
Tight but possible if your ship is in until evening. The Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion is about 70 km southeast of Athens — roughly 90 minutes by coach each way, longer by public bus. Most ship-sponsored Sounion tours skip the Acropolis to make the timing work. Independent travelers with an 8pm all-aboard sometimes pull off Acropolis-in-the-morning plus a private-driver Sounion run in the afternoon, but it's a long day and you'll pay €180–250 for the private car.
Glyfada and the so-called Athens Riviera (Vouliagmeni, Astir Beach) are real and pleasant — clean water, paid beach clubs around €25–60 for a sunbed, decent seafood tavernas. But this is Athens. You came for ruins. Skip the beach unless you've already been to the Acropolis on a previous trip and your itinerary hits zero other Greek islands, which it almost never does on a Med cruise.
Greece is on the euro. Cards work everywhere that matters — Acropolis ticket office, restaurants in Plaka, the metro ticket machines, taxis (most accept card now, though a driver may claim the reader is broken). Carry €30–50 in small notes for tavernas in the side streets, tipping, and the one cab driver whose card machine has genuinely died.
