Messina is the gateway. Most cruisers never see it — they're on a coach to Taormina by 9 a.m. and back on the ship by 5.
Pick one. Taormina is the easier, prettier day — 45 km south, reachable by train for €4–5 in about an hour. Etna is a longer commitment: roughly two hours each way and effectively a guided-tour-or-private-driver outing if you actually want to get on the volcano.
Some operators sell combined Etna + Taormina excursions, but they sample both rather than letting you experience either properly. With seven or eight hours in port and a sailaway clock, choosing one and doing it well is the move.

Licensed white taxis queue at the port. A taxi to Taormina runs roughly €100–130 each way and takes about 45 minutes — more than the train costs round-trip for a family of four. For Taormina, take the train. For Mt Etna, you want a pre-booked tour or private driver, not a port taxi.
Italy uses the euro. Cards work for restaurants, shops, and entrance fees; cash is useful for trains, public buses up to Taormina town, espresso bars, and tipping. ATMs near the port and Messina Centrale dispense euros directly from your home bank account.
Taormina (45 km south, Greek theater + cliff views + Isola Bella) is the easier, more independent-friendly day — train both ways works fine. Mt Etna (~2 hours each way) needs a tour or private driver to actually reach the cable car and crater zone. Combining both in a single port day is sold but rarely satisfying.
Cruise ships dock right at Messina's central waterfront, a few minutes' walk from the cathedral and about 15 minutes on foot to Messina Centrale train station. No tender, no shuttle required for the city itself.
The famous beach is below Taormina, not in Messina. Reaching it from the ship means train to Taormina-Giardini, bus or cable car up to Taormina, then back down to the cove — round-trip transit eats 3+ hours. Doable, but you're choosing it instead of the Greek theater, not in addition to.
The train is the fastest and cheapest option. Messina Centrale station is about a 15-minute walk from the cruise pier. Trenitalia regional trains to Taormina-Giardini run roughly hourly, take about an hour, and cost around €4–5 each way. From Taormina-Giardini station, a local bus or taxi climbs the cliff up to Taormina town — the station itself is at sea level.
Train: about an hour, ~€4–5, but you still need a bus or taxi up from the station to the town. Interbus runs direct buses Messina–Taormina that drop you in town, but they take about 1.5 hours. Organized ship or third-party tours run roughly €50 per person and handle the climb. A private driver for the day is €150+ depending on group size.
Technically yes, practically no. Public transport to the cable car at Rifugio Sapienza requires connections through Catania and eats most of your port day. Almost everyone who actually gets on Etna from a Messina call does it via a shore excursion or a pre-booked private driver-guide.
It's gorgeous — a tiny tied island in a cove below Taormina's cliffs — but the day is tight. You're committing to Taormina + the cable car or stairs down to the cove + beach time + the climb back. If you want a beach day, do Isola Bella and skip the Greek theater. If you want the theater and the views, treat Isola Bella as a photo from above.
The cathedral square at noon. The astronomical clock on the bell tower runs through its full mechanical sequence — gilded lions, roosters, biblical figures — at 12:00 daily. It takes about 12 minutes. Pier-to-piazza is a 10-minute walk. If your ship leaves before 1 p.m., this is your Messina.
Euros. Italy is in the eurozone. Cards are widely accepted in Taormina and at tourist sites, but bring cash for train tickets, small cafes, public bus fares, and tipping drivers. ATMs (bancomat) are easy to find near the port and at the train station.
