Port Canaveral is the second-busiest cruise port in the world and the place Disney built its home terminal. It's also the place most cruisers underestimate the airport transfer cost.
It's a 45-mile, roughly one-hour drive east on the 528 Beachline. Shared shuttles run about $30 per person each way; Uber and Lyft typically quote $50–$70; a flat-rate taxi is around $95. Most cruise lines also sell their own bus transfer for $40–$50.
Plan the airport-to-port leg as a real budget line — for a family of four, transfers can rival the cost of a hotel night.

Ride-share (Uber/Lyft) usually $65–$90; shared shuttles like Go Port and Cocoa Beach Shuttle ~$30 per person. Add 20–30 minutes for weekday rush hour on the Beachline (SR-528).

Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex is the marquee day trip — roughly 25 minutes by car from the cruise terminals. Cape Canaveral Space Force Station tours run separately and require advance booking with ID. For a half-day: Cocoa Beach Pier and Ron Jon Surf Shop, both about 10 minutes from the port.
Disney sails from Terminals 8 and 10 with the Disney-branded check-in lobby. Royal Caribbean uses T1, Carnival uses T6, Norwegian and MSC share T10. All berths are alongside — no tendering.
The closest real beach is Cocoa Beach — free public access with paid lots near the pier. Not a beach-club port: bring a towel, walk the sand, eat at the pier.
Disney Cruise Line uses Terminals 8 and 10. Royal Caribbean is at Terminal 1. Carnival is at Terminal 6. Norwegian and MSC operate from Terminal 10. Always confirm on your boarding documents — Port Canaveral occasionally shifts assignments around dry-dock turnover weekends.
Yes, especially if your flight connects. Orlando weather delays are routine, and a missed sailing here means catching the ship in Nassau on your own dime. A pre-cruise night in Cocoa Beach also gives you Kennedy Space Center as a half-day option.
Yes — Port Canaveral runs covered and open-air lots next to each terminal at $17–$19 per day depending on terminal and lot type. You can pre-book online; cash and card are accepted at the gate. Off-port lots near Cocoa Beach run cheaper with shuttle service if you'd rather pre-pay outside the port system.
Three real choices. Cocoa Beach (10 minutes south) gives you the beach, Ron Jon Surf Shop, and decent mid-range chains. Port Canaveral itself has a cluster of inn-strip hotels right at the terminals — convenient, less charming. Orlando is fine if you're flying in late, but you'll pay for a second transfer in the morning.
Comfortably, yes. The Visitor Complex is about 25 minutes from the cruise terminals — closer than your hotel will probably be to the airport. Plan a full day for it; the rocket garden and Atlantis exhibit alone need three or four hours, and Saturn V is a separate bus tour.
A long, flat Atlantic beach you can walk for miles, the Cocoa Beach Pier, and the original two-story Ron Jon Surf Shop that's open 24 hours. It's not Miami — it's a working beach town — which is exactly the appeal for a few hours before boarding.
