Dalian sits at the tip of the Liaodong Peninsula, a north-east Chinese port city that grew up under Russian and Japanese planning and never quite shook the habit of looking tidy. Cruise ships dock at the Dalian International Cruise Terminal, close enough to the city's squares and seafront that you don't need a grand plan to fill a day.
Start with Zhongshan Square's colonial architecture, head to the Xinghai Square seafront, then choose either Tiger Beach Ocean Park (Laohutan) for aquariums and coast or Bangchui Island for a quieter beach. Russian Street near the terminal is an easy add-on. A taxi or the city's tram network connects all of it comfortably within a day.
Dalian's main sights are spread along the coast rather than clustered, so pick two or three rather than chasing all of them.
Taxis are metered and inexpensive by international standards. Carry your destinations written in Chinese characters as drivers rarely speak English. Mobile payment is the norm; confirm the driver takes cash if you do not have a local payment app.
The currency is the Chinese yuan, also called renminbi (CNY/RMB). Mobile payment apps dominate everyday transactions; cash is still accepted but increasingly awkward for small vendors. ATMs are available in the city centre. Decline dynamic currency conversion if a card terminal offers to bill you in your home currency.
The historic naval town of Lushun, roughly 45 km south-west, is the most common day trip and reachable by road in about an hour. Some military-history sites have access restrictions, so check current rules before committing a port day to it.
Ships berth at the dedicated cruise terminal in the port area on the north side of the city centre. Russian Street is within walking distance; the main squares and seafront need a taxi or tram.
Dalian sits on the cool Yellow Sea and is not set up for recreational scuba diving. The coastal draw is parks, aquariums and promenades rather than underwater sites.
Dalian's beaches are public city beaches rather than club-style operations. Bangchui Island and Fujiazhuang offer swimming and headland views in summer; there is no beach-club booking culture here.
Ships use the Dalian International Cruise Terminal in the port area on the north side of the city centre. It is close to the downtown squares, with Russian Street within walking distance and Zhongshan Square a short taxi ride away.
Xinghai Square is one of the largest city squares in the world and sits on a reclaimed bay south-west of the centre. The square itself is vast and mostly open paving, but the attached seafront promenade and park make the trip worthwhile, especially in good weather.
Tiger Beach Ocean Park, known locally as Laohutan, is a coastal park and aquarium complex on the rocky shore east of central Dalian. It includes a polar aquarium, a coral hall and a bird-watching area, plus walking paths along the cliffs. Plan a couple of hours if you go.
Russian Street is a short restored stretch of early-20th-century buildings near the port, now lined with souvenir stalls. It is heavy on tourist shopping and light on substance, but it is close to the terminal and makes an easy photo stop if you have time to spare.
Zhongshan Square is a large circular plaza ringed by colonial-era buildings from the Russian and Japanese periods — banks, hotels and civic buildings, most still in use. It is the historic heart of the city and an easy, free walk if you like architecture.
