Taxi
Red urban taxi rank at both terminals; flagfall HK$29; no Uber preference; pay HKD cash or Octopus
Red urban taxis (for Hong Kong Island and Kowloon) line up at the rank outside both terminals on arrival days. Flagfall is HK$29 (US$3.70) for the first 2 km, then HK$2.10 per 200 m. From Ocean Terminal: Central via tunnel HK$80–110 (US$10–14, includes HK$25 round-trip toll), Peak Tram lower terminus HK$60–80 (US$8–10), Causeway Bay HK$90–120 (US$11–15). From Kai Tak: Central HK$120–180 (US$15–23), Tsim Sha Tsui HK$80–120 (US$10–15), Hong Kong International Airport HK$300–380 (US$38–48) plus HK$150 in tolls. Show drivers the destination written in Chinese — the airport hotel and tourist info desks print cards, or have your destination on Google Maps in Chinese. All taxis legally accept Octopus and most take credit card via FPS, but HK$ cash is still preferred by older drivers. Uber operates here but is the same price and harder to find; taxis are the easier default. Tipping is not expected; round up the meter.
Currency
Hong Kong dollar (HKD); pegged at ~HK$7.80 to US$1; Octopus card + contactless cover almost everything
The Hong Kong dollar is pegged to the US dollar at roughly HK$7.80 = US$1 and has been stable for decades. Octopus card is the killer feature — buy one at the terminal arrivals desk or any MTR Customer Service window (HK$50 deposit plus HK$100 fare, or HK$39 Tourist Octopus with HK$50 preloaded and no deposit) and tap it on every MTR turnstile, every bus, the Star Ferry, the Peak Tram, plus 7-Eleven, most chain cafés, many restaurants, and convenience stores. Visa, Mastercard, Amex, and Apple/Google Pay work in malls, mid-range and upscale restaurants, and most chain shops. Bring HK$200–400 (US$25–50) cash for cart-style dim sum houses, Mong Kok street markets, Star Ferry single tickets if you didn't get an Octopus, and older taxi drivers. ATMs are at every MTR station and every 7-Eleven — HSBC and Hang Seng give the best rates. Tipping is not customary; restaurants add a 10% service charge automatically and you do not tip on top. Round up the taxi fare and that's the extent of it.
Day trip
Victoria Peak (2–3 hrs) or Big Buddha on Lantau (4.5–5 hrs, only on 9+ hour calls) or dim sum + Star Ferry + Mong Kok (3–4 hrs)
Three honest day-shapes for a Hong Kong port call. Victoria Peak is the postcard: Peak Tram from Garden Road plus Sky Terrace 428, 2–3 hours round trip from either terminal, HK$148 (US$19) for the Peak Tram + Sky Terrace combo booked online to skip the queue. Tian Tan Big Buddha and Po Lin Monastery on Lantau via Ngong Ping 360 cable car is the full-day option — 4.5–5 hours round trip, HK$235 (US$30) cable car standard cabin, only attempt this if your ship is in for 9+ hours. The walking-and-eating day: Star Ferry from Tsim Sha Tsui to Central (HK$5, 7 minutes), dim sum at Tim Ho Wan or Lin Heung, MTR back to Mong Kok for the Ladies' Market and Goldfish Market, finish on the Tsim Sha Tsui promenade for the harbour view — 3–4 hours, under HK$200 (US$25) in fares and transport. Skip the harbour cruise tours sold at the pier; the Star Ferry IS the harbour cruise for HK$5.
Dock
Two terminals — Ocean Terminal (Tsim Sha Tsui, central, walk to Star Ferry/MTR) or Kai Tak Cruise Terminal (Kowloon Bay, isolated, shuttle or taxi only)
Hong Kong has two cruise terminals and they produce different port days. Ocean Terminal at Harbour City in Tsim Sha Tsui is the older facility; your ship docks beside a shopping mall, you walk through Harbour City to the Star Ferry pier (8 minutes) or to MTR Tsim Sha Tsui station (4 minutes through Canton Road exit). Kai Tak Cruise Terminal opened in 2013 on the runway of the former Kai Tak airport in Kowloon Bay; it handles the largest cruise ships (up to Oasis class) but has no MTR station yet — the Tung Chung Line extension is still under construction in 2026. From Kai Tak the options are the free terminal shuttle to Kwun Tong MTR station (15 min) or Diamond Hill MTR (10 min), or a taxi from the on-site rank. Both terminals have arrivals halls with currency exchange, Octopus card sales, free WiFi, and English-speaking information desks. Check your booking 48 hours before arrival — terminal assignments can change.
