Falmouth

If you've never done it, yes — the climb up the 180-foot tiered waterfall holding hands with strangers is the iconic Jamaica cruise photo for a reason. Logistics: Dunn's River is in Ocho Rios, roughly 70 km (43 mi) east of Falmouth, about 70 minutes each way by coach. Park entrance is $25 USD. Ship excursions run $80–110 per person; a private JUTA taxi for a group of four lands closer to $50 each round trip plus park entrance. Open daily 8:30am to 4pm. Go early — by 11am the falls are wall-to-wall with three ships' worth of climbers.

Glistening Waters at Rock, about 3 km east of the port, is one of only four bioluminescent bays of meaningful brightness in the world — dinoflagellates light up blue-green when the water is disturbed. It's striking. The catch: the lagoon only glows at night, and your ship usually leaves Falmouth by 5 or 6pm. You can do it only if your ship has a late-night call or overnight, or if you book the ship's official sunset excursion. Don't book a non-ship Luminous Lagoon tour for a daytime call — you will miss the boat literally and figuratively. Boat tour from the marina is around $25 USD for adults; ship excursions run $70–90.

If you only want shopping and a beer, no — the Merchant's Walk courtyard inside the gates has duty-free, jewelry, rum, and clean bathrooms, and that's a perfectly fine cruise day. If you want to see actual Falmouth, walk through the gate and into Water Square; the Georgian courthouse, the 1796 parish church, and Market Street are all within a 10-minute walk. Expect to be approached by vendors and unlicensed 'guides' the moment you exit — a polite 'no thanks, walking' repeated four or five times handles it. The historic walk is real and rewarding for the architecture-curious; it is not relaxing.

Use JUTA-licensed taxis only — they're red-plate vehicles dispatched from the official taxi stand outside the port gate, and rates are posted and regulated. Unlicensed drivers will offer cheaper fares; don't take them. Sample published JUTA round-trip rates from Falmouth: Dunn's River Falls about $45 per person, Luminous Lagoon about $25 per person, Montego Bay about $30 per person. Always agree the price in USD before getting in. Tipping 10–15% is normal. Uber does not operate in Falmouth.

USD works everywhere a cruise passenger goes — port shops, taxis, excursion vendors, beach bars all quote in USD. Inside the gated complex, prices are USD only. Outside the gate at the Wharf Market and street stalls, you'll get a slightly better deal in JMD if you happen to have it, but the markup for paying in USD is small and not worth the ATM trip. Cards work at the duty-free stores and any sit-down restaurant; carry $40–60 in small USD bills for taxi tips, vendor stalls, and the occasional 'no card today' moment.

There's no walkable public beach from the cruise port — Falmouth town fronts a working harbor, not sand. The standard beach moves are Burwood Beach (about 6 km west, quiet, free entry, basic facilities), or a paid day pass at one of the Trelawny resorts: Bahia Principe Grand Jamaica or Royalton Blue Waters, both 15–20 minutes by taxi. Resort day passes run $90–130 with food and drink included. If a swim is your priority, this is a port to spend $90 on a resort pass — the no-frills public beaches are fine but not memorable.
