Walk or shuttle to Sannomiya, take the green-line subway one stop (¥210, 2 minutes) to Shin-Kobe Shinkansen station, then a Nozomi or Hikari to Kyoto in 27–32 minutes for ¥2,870 unreserved. Round-trip about ¥6,000 in train fare per person. There are 3–4 direct trains per hour. Skip the JR Rapid via Osaka unless you're trying to save money — it adds 30+ minutes each way, which is the whole game on a cruise day.

Himeji is 15–20 minutes from Shin-Kobe by Hikari or Sakura Shinkansen, the castle is a five-minute walk from Himeji station, and it's the most intact original castle in Japan. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (last entry 4 p.m.) most of the year, extended to 6 p.m. last entry from late April through August. Adult admission is ¥2,500 as of March 2026; combined ticket with Kokoen Garden is ¥2,600. Budget 2.5 hours on site plus travel.

Skip the cruise-line excursion lunch and book a counter seat at one of the city's teppanyaki specialists — Steakland Kobe (Sannomiya, mid-priced lunch sets around ¥4,000–6,000), Mouriya (multiple branches, ¥6,000+ lunch, ¥15,000+ dinner), or Kobe Plaisir near Sannomiya. Reserve before you sail. The ¥3,000 'Kobe beef' bowl at random Sannomiya tourist joints is usually wagyu, not certified Kobe — real Kobe beef has a 10-digit individual identification number you can look up on the official traceability site.

Yes, more than people expect. The Disaster Reduction and Human Renovation Institution (DRI) in HAT Kobe documents the 1995 Great Hanshin-Awaji earthquake with a quietly devastating opening film and survivor testimony. Open 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., closed Mondays. Adult admission ¥650. About 20 minutes from Sannomiya by JR plus a 10-minute walk, or take the Hanshin line to Iwaya. Not light, but the most honest thing in the city.

Cards work at department stores, the Shinkansen ticket machines, hotels, and most Sannomiya restaurants — but Japan is still meaningfully cash-friendly compared to the rest of OECD. Pull ¥10,000–20,000 from a 7-Eleven or Japan Post Bank ATM at the port or in Sannomiya for taxis (some still cash-only), small izakaya, temple admissions on a Kyoto detour, and the ramen joint that doesn't take Visa.
