Taxi
Metered taxis at the pier; ~¥1,000–1,500 to Sannomiya
Japanese taxis are metered, honest, and overkill for the trip from either pier — Sannomiya is a 5-minute, ~¥1,000–1,500 ride from Naka Pier and similar from Shinko Pier. Drivers do not haggle and the meter is always on. Cards (Visa, Mastercard, JCB) are accepted in most Kobe taxis but not all; carry ¥3,000–5,000 in cash as a backup. The rear left door opens automatically — let the driver handle it. Uber operates in Japan only as a dispatch layer for licensed taxis, not private cars.
Currency
Japanese yen (JPY); cards accepted, cash for small spots
Japan uses the yen. Major chains, department stores, and Shinkansen ticket machines take cards and contactless, but plenty of taxis, small izakayas, ramen counters, and temple admissions are still cash-only. Use 7-Eleven ATMs (Seven Bank) or Japan Post Bank ATMs — both accept foreign cards reliably. Load an IC card (ICOCA in Kansai, or Welcome Suica from Tokyo) at any station ticket machine for trains, buses, and convenience stores. Tipping is not expected and can confuse the staff.
Day trip
Kyoto by Shinkansen (27–32 min) or Himeji Castle (15–20 min)
Two genuinely different days. Kyoto is the marquee detour — Nozomi/Hikari from Shin-Kobe to Kyoto Station in 27–32 minutes, ¥2,870 unreserved, then 5 hours on the ground if your ship is in until 6 p.m. (Kiyomizu-dera + Gion is the realistic shape; don't try Arashiyama). Himeji Castle is the smarter pick if you've done Kyoto: same Shinkansen line west, 15–20 minutes from Shin-Kobe, castle is 5 minutes from the station, ¥2,500 admission, hours 9–17 most of the year. For Mt. Rokko / Arima Onsen, stay local — cable car plus ropeway from Sannomiya, full half-day.
Dock
Alongside, downtown — Naka Pier or Shinko Pier No. 4
No tendering. Naka Pier sits at Meriken Park, a 15–20 minute walk to Sannomiya; the terminal is small and intimate. Kobe Port Terminal on Shinko Pier No. 4 is the larger facility, six berths across two sides of the pier with a depth of 12 m, handling Princess, Celebrity, MSC and other big-ship calls. A free shuttle bus typically runs from Shinko Pier to Sannomiya during cruise calls. Confirm your specific berth on the ship's daily — the walk back can vary by 10 minutes.
